Glossary of Terms
BLIND EMBOSSING
A design, which is stamped without gold leaf or ink giving abase-relief effect
COMBO DIE
(1) A die, which incorporates both, the features of a steel rule die with male and female blanking elements. Many times the perimeter of a die may be a steel rule blade and the cutouts can be male and female cutouts. The perimeter may not require close tolerance, but the cutouts may require close tolerance. In some cases, a male/female die is required to cut out intricate designs. (2) A die layout consisting of more than one box design multiple cartons of different types in a single layout
CREASING RULES
(1) The rules that crease the sheet. They may be of varying widths to best suit the thickness of the stock being creased. (2)Only to crease or score
CUT RULE
Steel rule blades designed to cut material being produced on flat-bed die cutting equipment
CUTTING DIE
Term covering the total family of numerous types of “sharper edge cutting dies”
DEBOSS
A term related to embossing and embossing dies to cause an area of material to be lower than the surrounding areas
DEBOSSED
An indent or cut in design or lettering of a surface
DEBOSSING
A technique for impressing a design or texture into a sheet of material to extend backward from the viewing face
DIE
Any of various knife edged cutting or trimming tools or devices such as clicker dies, high dies, steel rule dies etc. , used for cutting a desired shape into soft or semi-rigid material
DIEBOARD
Used as the carrier for steel rule in cutting dies, usually hardwood plywood
EMBOSSED FINISH
Paper with a raised or depressed surface resembling wood, cloth, leather or other pattern
EMBOSSING
Impressing an image in relief to achieve a raised surface; either over printing, or on blank paper (which is called blind embossing). A technique for impressing a design or texture into a sheet of material from the back of the sheet so that the design extends toward the viewer
EMBOSSING DIE
Engraved or cast die that embosses a design into sheet of paper, paperboard or other material that will allow an embossed image to be permanently fixed in the material such as leather or some plastics
FIBERGLASS MAKEREADY COUNTERS
Used in conjunction with engraving dies
FOIL STAMPERS
A variation of cutting presses that hot foil stamp foil onto paper and paperboard or other materials
GRIPPER EDGE
(1) The front edge of a die on a sheet fed press. (2) The leading edge of paper as it passes through a printing press. Also, the front edge of a lithographic or wrap-around plate that is secured to front clamp of plate cylinder
HOT FOIL STAMPING
A process of transferring gold leaf or other materials from a foil carrier onto some material like leather or paper
KISS CUT
In diecutting, to cut through only the top layer or layers of pressure sensitive material and leave the backing stock uncut
LOCK UP
(1) In letterpress, to position a form in a chase for printing. (2) In diemaking the procedure of securing the wooden blocks in a die under pressure within the metal chase to produce a block die. 3) In diecutting, the positioning of a steel rule die to the platen of a press
MAKEREADY
(1) In letterpress, the building up of the press form so that heavy and light areas print with the correct impression. The sheet that is patched with gummed paper or tape to make the cutting knives cut to a uniform depth. It is placed in position on the cylinder under the jacket. (2) in diecutting, it is the build up or spotting of a die with a hard material under the die blades to build up areas of the die blade so that the die will provide 100% cutting. (3)On printing presses, all operation prior to running; such as mounting plates, adjusting the in-feed, edge guide, putting ink in the foundation, adjusting the impression, setting up the diecutting, color matching, etc. All preparatory operations preceding production.
NICKING OF THE DIE
Nicks that are put into cutting knives to produce occasional breaks in a continuous line of cutting so that there will be enough stock left uncut to hold the sheet together for delivery purposes
PERFORATED
Refers to a series of small incisions made in laid-on labels and/or their release liner to facilitate tearing along a pre-determined line, or for fan folding
PERFORATED SCORE
Score made by a perforated cutting rule that is relieved at regular intervals to achieve a cut/score effect
PERFORATING RULE
A cutting rule that produces perforations in the material to be diecut. The perforations can be an aid to better glue adherence in the folding and gluing process of folding cartons
RE-RULING
Re-ruling refers to the re-knifing of a steel rule die to replace a dull or worn steel rule blade so that the die will be sharp again for continued effective use
REVERSE CREASE SCORE
A plate with an unsharpened ridge placed on the counter to produce a score from the inside of the carton. Used where a reverse fold is desired
REVERSE CUT SCORE
Steel cutting plate to produce a partial cut through on the inside of the printed piece
REVERSE SCORE
Making a male score from the side opposite the normal die mount. Requires one to one impression
RIGHT-ANGLE FOLD
In binding, a term used for two or more folds that are at 900 angels to each other
ROLL LEAF MATERIALS
Thin foil materials used in embossing to add highlights to the paper stock
SCORE
To impress or indent a mark with a string or rule in the paper to make folding easier. An impression or crease in corrugated or solid fiberboard to facilitate folding. To crease material and break down fiber so that material can be folded
SCORING RULE
Steel blade that leaves impression in blank without cutting usually a fold line
STEEL RULE DIE
A cutting die that is produced by inserting sharpened pre-finished blades into jig sawed or laser cut die lines into a maple, birch or composite dieboard. The rule is too thin to support itself as in a clicker or forged high die. The thicknesses of steel rule die blades in a steel rule die are measured in points. A point equals . 014"
STEP AND REPEAT
In photomechanics, the procedure of multiple exposures using the same image by stepping it in position according to a predetermined layout
STRIPPING
(1) In offset-lithography, the positioning of negatives (or positives) on a flat(goldenrod) prior to peacemaking. (2) In diecutting, the removal of the diecut material and all associates scrap materials from a cutting die. Also, the removal of all diecut sections from a sheet of stock
